Memcached is a simple, fast and infinitely scalable in-memory object caching system. Dynamic web applications use memcached to store frequently used data, reducing database load.

The Heroku memcached add-on is built on the Couchbase distribution of memcached (Membase Memcached Server) which includes an advanced, per-user security model. The service is fully managed by Couchbase - a company formed and run by leaders of the memcached open source project.

Every web application will benefit from memcached, and tens of thousands do every day. It can instantly improve application performance and makes an application feel more “snappy” to users. It should be a core architectural component of every new web application and existing applications can be quickly and easily retrofitted. Memcached is also the best way to ensure your application is able to scale to support more users. Memcached is a core component of some of the busiest applications on the web including Twitter, Wikipedia, Craigslist and Youtube. In fact, it is a core component of 18 of the top 20 sites. Underneath the Heroku memcached add-on is a distributed cluster of servers. Because the Couchbase memcached distribution supports automated, dynamic cluster growth, the memcached add-on can support your needs whether you are just developing your application or serving enough users to drive hundreds of thousands of memcached transactions per second.

Couchbase, Inc., is the company behind Couchbase, the simple, fast, elastic NoSQL database technology. The company provides products and services that enable customers to dramatically lower costs while simultaneously improving the scalability and performance of their interactive web applications. Couchbase is behind some of the world’s busiest web applications: it is the primary database for the popular FarmVille and Café World applications at Zynga; and it provides a shared data management platform for NHN, Korea’s largest web application operator with nearly 70 million unique users. Couchbase is also available through cloud service providers such as Heroku and RightScale, supporting thousands of applications of all sizes. Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., Couchbase is a privately held company funded by Accel Partners, Mayfield Fund and North Bridge Venture Partners.
